Rendering Passes

If you plan to composite your shots together and want a bit more control over things then this section's for you.

First off you need 3 cameras. Life's much easier that way when you dont have to constantly fiddle with render options, instead just switch Cams.

Create 'Toon', 'Lines' and 'Shadow' cameras.

Make sure your camera options all match (angle, resolution)

I like to use Toon as my main camera. Select the other cameras and put Translate-To and Orient-Like constraints on them targetting the Toon Cam.

Then Hide the 2 cams and disable them from being selected.

Select the ground in your choreography, Under Receive Shadows turn on 'Shadow Only'

Shadow Cam settings

Under your buffers turn on Alpha and Shadow.

Line Cam settings

Go into the Toon Renderer options and switch Lines Only ON. Then turn Alpha ON under buffers.

You may want to render the line passes at a larger size. (1280x960 instead of 640x480 for example) When they're shrunk back down and composited in the lines look much cleaner and crisper.

Toon Cam setting

Make sure Toon Renderer is on, then turn on OVerride Lines. Change Line Thickness to 0.

Switch Alpha ON under buffers.

Now render from all 3 cameras, use a naming convention which works for ya so you dont get confused.

character-toon000.tga, character-lines000.tga, character-shadows000.tga and so on.
